Our students continuously look for opportunities to support those less fortunate than them and this year, we were alerted to the "Write a Book in a Day" initiative. This is a fundraiser for the Kids Cancer Project, a national charity supporting childhood cancer research. It is a fun, creative and collaborative competition for students where teams of up to ten have just twelve hours to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. To make it even more fun, unique parameters must be included in the story. Digital editions of the completed stories are donated to children in hospitals across Australia.
In our first year entering, we had 4 teams enthusiastically sign up and commit to a challenging and rewarding day of writing. Buzzing with anticipation, students received their parameters, grabbed a banana, and hastily got to sketching out the plots of their stories. Ideas flew across the room as students contemplated how to incorporate human characters such as weightlifters, driving instructors and grandparents alongside non-human characters including robots, spiders and llamas.
