The first 5 weeks of term has flown by with many activities and events happening around our great school. Our swimming carnival was a highlight and other activities also provided our girls with opportunities to be leaders, to better themselves, to learn, and to contribute back to the community. This included Barista Training, Prefect meet & greet with other high schools, volleyball tournament, HSC recognition assembly, Open Day, Year 12 study skills workshop, visiting students from China, Tutoring Centre, along with our day to day innovative teaching and learning programs. It was lovely to see our highest achieving 2017 Year 12 students return for the Dux assembly. It was an opportunity to be inspired by their successes and hear about their future pathways. Our Dux, Yanfeng Zhu, will be studying a combined degree of Advanced Science and Fine Arts at UNSW.
The Minister for Education recently announced that Year 9 NAPLAN tests will no longer be available as an early way for students to demonstrate the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy needed to receive the HSC from 2020. This is applicable to students in year 9 and below.
Year 11 students are already noticing the difference in workload and I am sure we can support them in rising to the occasion. They have been issued with the Year 11 Assessment book for 2018 and it should be referred to regularly. (Also available on our website.) Homework completion and regular revision are essential for success and result in less stress around exam time. All students are encouraged to use the University of Sydney's online tutoring program ‘Your Tutor'. This is a valuable resource as it allows you to get help with homework, study and assessments between the hours of 3pm and 10pm Sunday to Friday. Go to http://astar.tv
Over the next few weeks, our teachers will be working closely with Year 12 as they prepare for their half yearly examinations and assessments. These exams will contribute to the final school mark for their Higher School Certificate and ATAR and therefore it is vital the students put in 110% effort. We are here to help – I hope to see many girls asking for extra teacher advice at recess and lunchtime.
As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss your daughter's schooling here at Moorefield Girls.
